Описание: safed was once a predominantly arab town. because of the mystical significance of the town for jews, they emigrated here in a fairly steady stream in the 19th and early 20th century. in 1948, there was a lot of fighting in the town, which resulted in the expulsion and/or flight (depending on who you ask--it was probably both) of almost all the arab residents from the town. that left a ghost town in what had been the arab quarter. in the 1950s artists started moving in. so now it's known as the artist quarter. the ottoman-era mosque in the center of the photo is now an exhibition hall for artists' works.
