Behind the wide Chinese mainstreets with their new facades lies a warren of laneways that make up the residential and commercial heart of the Tibetan communities. As you drive through the larger Tibetan towns you could be forgiven for thinking you were in any other region of China. The effect is entirely intentional. You only need go back one row of buildings and the true identity of the place is revealed.
