Описание: Tram in Kaliningrad, Russia. Kaliningrad has tram network that can be called unique for two reasons: firstly, it operates since 1895 what makes it one of the oldest tram systems of Russia. Secondly, it is one of only two narrow gauge tram systems of Russia. The gauge is only 1000 mm wide. Unfortunately, Kaliningrad tram has hard times now. City officials seems to consider it "archaic" transport, so tram tracks are systematiclly removed from the streets to make more space for the cars. If this politicy will continue, the whole system will be destroyed in the next couple of years. There is also almoust no investement in the system. The tracks are so bad, that in some places trams cannot ride faster than pedestrians! The newest cars are more than 20 y o. So Kaliningrad follows the sad scenario of Voronezh, Archangelsk and other Russian cicites that "get rid ot the tram" recently: everyting for automobile, no investements and then - remove the trams because they are too dangerous! Ironicly, this happens when a lot of Europen and American cities reintoroduce trams. This photo was made by my mother during her trip to Kaliningrad this April. I've got her permission to publish this pic under creative commons here.
