In order to have access to its beaches, it is necessary to cross the Madre River, a geographical border between the municipalities of Paulo Lopes and Palhoca. The spa is located in Serra do Tabuleiro State Park and has approximately 1000 residents, including merchants, artisans, fishermen and surfers. In addition to surfing and tourism as sources of economy, in the traditional artisanal fishing of the mullet, between the months of May and July, another source of income. A small community of fishermen and farmers that from the beginning of the 70's was discovered by surfers, being considered since then as one of the ten best waves for practicing the sport in Brazil. According to the natives of the region, the name came from the fact that, centuries ago, a pirate ship that sailed by the region there was shipwrecked. As the pirates possessed treasures, they were forced to bury them in a trunk on this coast. With the passage of time, the story was created that there were buried treasures stored in a chest in the region, which eventually gave rise to the current name of the locality. Commonly, the location of the beach is attributed to the municipality of Palhoca, neighbor to the north. This confusion is due to the fact that the village of Guarda, a small urban complex adjacent to the beach, is located in Palhoca, while the beach, south of the Madre River, is in Paulo Lopes. It was officially approved on October 27, 2016 by the World Surfing Reserve (WSR) Visitation Council and Save the Waves Coalition, based in California (USA), as the ninth World Surfing Reserve (RMS) ), being the first in Brazil. The initiative of the application was from the Association of Surfing and Preservation of the Emba'u Guard (ASPG), which since 2013 sought to include the beach in the prestigious network of World Surfing Reserves. The Save the Waves Coalitioan program has been in existence since 2009 and has partnered with the International Surfing Association (ISA), National Surfing Reserves Australia (NSR) and the Center for Responsible Travel (CREST), Stanford (USA). It is located in a restinga, where it ends the Madre River, considered by Resolution 357/2005 of the National Environment Council (Conama) as a "special" class and is located at the confluence of three environmental protection units: Serra State Park of the Board; the Environmental Protection Area (APA) of the Coastal Environment and the APA of the Baleia Franca, which are listed by Unesco as an Atlantic Forest Biosphere Reserve (www.rbma.org.br).
