Timeline of National Flags: Europe

More than half a millennia of Europe's history in countries and flags. See the rise and fall of empires old and new, along with a little bit of the surrounding continents. NOTES: Disputed territories such as Kosovo, South Ossetia, Nagorno-Karabakh (now known as Artsakh), Crimea, are shown without a line separating them. De facto control is shown with de jure borders (e.g. Bulgaria is shown before its de jure independence, Islamic State, etc.) Russia is represented with its coat of arms on a red background until 1668. Ireland is represented using its earldom flag, though in reality it was broken up into many smaller states. Without enough flag information and pixels, the Holy Roman Empire is shown as a single state, though some states in the HRE are shown. All states are shown after 1806. "Semi-independent" Persian/Azerbaijani states are shown because why not. Holy Roman Empire: Blue outline Confederation of the Rhine: Green outline German Confederation: Red outline 9 months... I applaud you if you are reading this :) Spelled "precarious" incorrectly. :/ Deutsch--Zeitplan der Nationalflaggen: Europa Espa~nol--Cronolog'ia de banderas nacionales: Europa Francais--Chronologie des drapeaux nationaux: Europe Nederlands--Tijdlijn van nationale vlaggen: Europa Portugu^es--Cronologia de bandeiras nacionais: Europa Русский--Хронология государственных флагов: Европа Known errors: The flag of Finland should have a lighter hue on the frames 1918-1919. A slight border error on the Second Partition of Poland. The flag of Spain should not have the crown in 1873. Estonia and Latvia should have slightly more territory on its eastern border during the Interwar Period. Portugal should own Olivenza from the beginning until the frame 1800 when it is ceded to Spain.
