Îïèñàíèå: Designed and built by Higgins Industries, the LCM-3 (Landing Craft, Mechanised) could carry 60 troops, 60,000lbs of cargo or a 30-ton medium tank. It was powered by three 225hp diesels and could reach 11 knots when empty. 486 LCMs were used during Operation Overlord This original LCM was found in Oreston, Plymouth, and used in Spielberg’s 1998 movie “Saving Private Ryan” but was then inexplicably disposed of to a scrapyard in Portsmouth. It was saved by Jonathan Orrell, the son of Lieutenant Bob Orrell who had captured Le Grand Bunker in 1944. Using funds raised by ex-Royal Navy D-Day veteran Alan Reid and Pacific veteran Arthur Smith, it was shipped back to Normandy and restored during 2007. It has been returned to the markings it wore during filming, representing a landing craft from the U.S.S. Thomas Jefferson ‘APA-30’. This was historically inaccurate as units from the Jefferson were actually transported to the beach aboard British LCAs, but the overall effect was very good.
