��������: El lago del Desierto o laguna del Desierto es un lago que se encuentra en el departamento Lago Argentino de la provincia de Santa Cruz en Argentina, en inmediaciones de la frontera con Chile. Es accesible por la RP 41 recorriendo 37 km desde la localidad de El Chalt'en, ubicada a 25 km al sur del lago. La zona es un estrecho valle de forma rectangular de 10 km de largo y un promedio de ancho de 1 km, que corre en sentido nor-nordeste/sur-suroeste al oriente del encadenamiento principal de la cordillera de los Andes, entre el lago O'Higgins/San Mart'in y el monte Fitz Roy o Chalt'en a lo largo de 48 km en l'inea recta entre los dos puntos. La altura m'inima en el Hito 62 es de 250 msnm y la m'axima en el monte Fitz Roy es de 3406 msnm. El valle est'a enmarcado por dos cordones monta~nosos, el m'as occidental recibe el nombre de Vespigniani, el m'as oriental, de mayor continuidad pero m'as estrecho y menos elevado, es llamado cord'on Mart'inez de Rozas (al norte) y cord'on del Bosque (al sur). En el lago nace el r'io de las Vueltas, que luego de atravesar la laguna C'ondor desemboca en el lago Viedma. The lake, located near the mount Fitz Roy and the O'Higgins/San Mart'in Lake, has been the subject of a territorial dispute between Argentina and Chile, escalating to a small battle on 6 November 1965 when 40 to 90 members of the Argentine Gendarmerie fought against four Chilean Carabineros resulting the lieutenant Hern'an Merino killed and a sergeant injured, both members of Carabineros, the dispute was solved favourably for Argentina in 1994 with an arbitration. The region is a valley around the Laguna del Desierto (Spanish for "Lake of the Desert") located at 49�02'13''S 72�51'49''W north and east of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field (Spanish Campo de Hielo Sur), hence from Chile it is only accessible from north side (approx. 30 km south of Villa O'Higgins). From the Argentine side is accessible without obstacles. The valley is located between the Mart'inez de Rozas Range at the east and the (east) glaciers of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field at the west side and the lake get the waters of many rivers from the range and the glaciers and its waters flow through the de las Vueltas River (south side), to the Viedma lake and then to the Atlantic Ocean.
